Seven stages between a practical-exam pass and a patient in the chair. Each says what it needs, what it hands to the next, how long it takes and where it stalls. Certificate to registration usually takes 10 to 16 weeks; English evidence decides which end.
StartDone
Practical exam passed
Starts when
ADC releases practical results on ADC Connect, about six weeks after the exam.
The ADC practical result does not expire.
From here the only gate before practising is general registration with the Dental Board, administered by Ahpra.
Nothing in the registration process needs the certificate in hand yet: document work can start today.
Gives you
Eligibility to apply to the Dental Board of Australia.
Stage 1 of 6Available on ADC Connect after results; check every few days
Download the ADC certificate
Starts when
A pass on the practical exam.
The ADC awards the certificate after a successful practical exam and makes it available to download from your ADC Connect account. It is the document that proves eligibility to the Dental Board.
If a visa ever needs an ADC skills assessment, requesting it within 12 months of finishing the ADC pathway waives the $647 fee. Permanent residents and citizens do not need one.
Gives you
The ADC certificate PDF: the document that proves eligibility to the Board.

Where this stage stalls
Certificate not showing on ADC Connect
Cannot lodge a complete Ahpra application.
Avoid it: Chase the ADC after three weeks. Keep preparing every other document meanwhile.
Stage 2 of 62 to 6 weeks; English is usually the long pole
Documents and standards
Starts when
Start now, in parallel with the certificate.
English: a test result must be less than two years old on the day you submit. Test centre only; IELTS Academic, OET, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT or Cambridge. Results take one to two weeks, which makes this the item most likely to set the timeline.
Certified copies are made in person, with Ahpra's exact wording. Anything not in English needs a full translation by a NAATI-accredited translator. Documents sent to Ahpra directly by the issuer need no certification.
Recency of practice is not a hurdle: the Dental Board says passing the ADC examinations counts as meeting the standard.
Two documents live only three months from issue, the Certificate of Good Standing and the police check, so they are requested close to the submit date, not now.
Gives you
A complete, certified, translated document set and valid English evidence.

Where this stage stalls
English test older than two years at lodgement
Application cannot be assessed; a new test adds four to six weeks.
Avoid it: Check the test date today. Book a new sitting before anything else if it is close to expiring.
Document certified by the wrong person or with the wrong wording
Ahpra requests a replacement; the clock pauses and you have 30 days to respond.
Avoid it: Use the Ahpra certifying guide word for word. Documents sent directly to Ahpra by the issuer do not need certification.
Name differs across documents
Identity check fails or Ahpra asks for evidence.
Avoid it: Include certified evidence of every name change up front.
Stage 3 of 6A day to submit; identity check within 30 days
Lodge with Ahpra
Starts when
Certificate in hand, documents ready, English valid, ICHC reference number received.
The portal form saves as you go, so it can be started before the certificate arrives.
The police check is ordered before submitting: the form asks for the supplier's reference number. The Certificate of Good Standing is emailed by your previous regulator straight to COGS@ahpra.gov.au, dated within three months of Ahpra receiving the application.
The application fee and the first annual registration fee are paid together: $1,463 nationally ($611 + $852).
Within 48 hours InstaID+ emails a link for a selfie with your photo ID and photos of your identity documents. You have 30 days or the application is withdrawn and refunded.
Apply at least eight weeks before you want to start, and no more than six months ahead.
Gives you
A submitted application, the InstaID+ identity link, and the start of the CoGS and ICHC validity clocks.

ICHC ordered after lodging
Ahpra cannot assess until the result arrives.
Avoid it: Order it first; the reference page usually arrives in one to three business days.
InstaID+ link missed or left past 30 days
Application withdrawn and fee refunded; you start again.
Avoid it: Watch spam for the email. If nothing arrives in 48 hours, make an online enquiry to Ahpra, not InstaID+.
Certificate of Good Standing older than three months when Ahpra receives the application
Must be requested again.
Avoid it: Request it four to six weeks before you plan to lodge, not earlier.
Stage 4 of 64 to 6 weeks for international applicants; initial review 14 to 21 days in peak periods
Assessment and decision
Starts when
A complete application with identity verified.
Ahpra checks completeness first and contacts you if anything is missing. You have 30 days to supply it or the application is treated as withdrawn.
Track progress in the portal. Respond the same day to any request; each round trip costs weeks.
If you want to start later than the decision, ask your regulatory officer: a start date can be set up to 90 days after the decision. Until then you show as 'yet to commence'.
Registration appears on the public register immediately once granted. Employers check it; no certificate is needed to prove it.
Ahpra assigns your HPI-I (Healthcare Provider Identifier, Individual) on registration. You need it for HPOS.
Gives you
General registration, a registration number, your HPI-I, and your name on the public register.

Request for more information unanswered
30 days later the application closes.
Avoid it: Check the portal and email daily while under assessment.
ICHC result expired during a slow assessment
Order and pay again.
Avoid it: Order no earlier than six weeks before lodging.
Registration granted, or earlier for ADA candidate membership.
Professional indemnity insurance must cover every aspect of your practice and every location before you see a patient. An employer's policy can count; many associates still hold their own.
ADA membership is free for ADC candidates, and ADA NSW (which also covers the ACT) pairs it with free Guild cover while you study and discounted cover in the first registered year. There is no ACT branch: NSW/ACT members join ADA Federal direct.
Gives you
A professional indemnity policy number for your employer.

No cover on day one
You cannot lawfully practise, whatever the register says.
Avoid it: Have the policy start on or before the first working day; give the number to the practice manager in advance.
Stage 6 of 6Two to four weeks after registration, driven by Services Australia
Job and provider numbers
Starts when
Job search can start as soon as the application is lodged; numbers need registration.
Provider numbers can only be issued after registration is granted, and each practice location needs its own. The practice usually sets up health-fund and HICAPS numbers in parallel.
You may treat while waiting for the number, but patients cannot claim CDBS or health-fund benefits until it exists.
CPD starts on day one: 60 hours per three-year cycle, pro rata for a partial first cycle. Registration renews every year by 30 November.
Gives you
A Medicare provider number and prescriber number for the practice location, then your first patient.

Where this stage stalls
Provider number not issued by the first day
You can treat, but patients cannot claim until it exists.
Avoid it: Apply through HPOS the day registration is granted; ask the practice how long their last new dentist waited.
