After ADC

Registered. Now the numbers.

Registration lets you practise, insurance lets you see a patient, and provider numbers let the patient claim. Do them in that order, in parallel where you can.

Confirm you are registered

  • Your name appears on the Ahpra public register as soon as registration is granted; employers check it there.
  • If you asked for a later start date you show as 'yet to commence' until then, and are not on the register.
  • Note your registration number; practices, insurers and Services Australia ask for it.

Indemnity insurance and the ADA

  • Cover must be in place before your first patient, for all aspects of practice and all locations. Employer cover may count; confirm what it excludes.
  • ADA membership: free for ADC candidates, graduate-equivalent rates for anyone registered within the last two years. NSW and the ACT share one branch (ADA NSW); you join ADA Federal direct and pay branch and federal fees separately.
  • Guild Insurance partners with ADA NSW, ADAVB, ADA SA and ADATAS; ADA NSW's offer is free Guild cover while studying and discounted cover in the first registered year.

HPI-I

  • Ahpra assigns a Healthcare Provider Identifier, Individual (HPI-I) to every registered practitioner. Ask Ahpra for yours if it is not shown in the portal.
  • HPOS needs it to issue provider numbers, and My Health Record and electronic prescribing use it.

PRODA, HPOS and provider numbers

  • 1. Register for PRODA (Provider Digital Access) with your identity documents.
  • 2. Log in to HPOS through PRODA and link your HPI-I.
  • 3. Apply for the initial Medicare provider number for the practice location; it is the number you bill, refer and request with, including for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.
  • 4. In the same application, under location details, apply for the prescriber number (PBS prescribing).
  • 5. Every additional location needs another provider number; close numbers for locations you leave. Locums need one per location even for a day.
  • Online applications are faster than the paper HW093 form. New dentists may treat while waiting, but patients cannot claim until the number exists; ask the practice how long their last new dentist waited.
  • Health funds and HICAPS numbers are usually arranged by the practice manager; start them in parallel.

Ongoing obligations

  • CPD: 60 hours per three-year cycle (current cycle 1 December 2025 to 30 November 2028), at least 48 of them clinical or scientific, pro rata for a partial first cycle. Keep a log; audits happen.
  • Renewal: every year by 30 November. A late period runs to 31 December with a late fee; after that registration lapses and you cannot practise until a fast-track application is processed.
  • Keep indemnity cover continuous, including run-off cover if you stop practising.

If a visa needs a skills assessment

  • The ADC's skills assessment for migration is separate from registration. Only certain visas need it; check with the Department of Home Affairs.
  • Request it through ADC Connect within 12 months of finishing the ADC pathway and the $647 fee is waived. The outcome takes about eight weeks and is valid three years.
